A Few Words From Mark
The inspiration for this program goes back to my
college days at UO while studying for my Recreation and Park
Management degree. A professor was pioneering a Seniors Camp
program and as a student I was on the staff. So in the winter
at Diamond Lake, while managing our cross country ski program,
I began to imagine how we could have a similar good time here.
Outdoor activities, evening programs, good food, good staff of
all ages, and some fun guests were the necessary ingredients.
My "collegue" Eileen Roth and I asked
our boss for a go-ahead on the project, which he granted, and
we started stirring the pot!
The results have been tastey, and a lot of fun
for everyone involved. Volunteer staff from 16-84 years old have
had a blast working together to help the guests enjoy skiing,
snow shoeing, inner tubing, music and all sorts of mischief.
We love getting together each winter. The lodge staff have also
embraced this event and and enjoy making it great for our guests
too.
Eileen and I originally worked together at a ski
lodge in Colorado. She was tremendous at organizing and implementing
(doing the work for) all the projects that I imagine. So I invited
her to work at a youth camp that I directed on the coast and
then to work with the Diamond Lake Ski Program. I've been thinking
up stuff for Eileen to do for over 20 years now, and she's been
getting it done. Actually, we collaborate pretty well as a team
and help each other to get it all done and that is just another
part of the fun.
Eileen and I left our winter positions at Diamond
Lake Resort several years ago. Eileen went on to build trails
in Montana and I left to lead bike tours. But we still love to
come back to Diamond Lake each winter to enjoy our guests, staff
and this special program.
We have learned how to do some things well over
the years and are excited to develop some new things too. Our
snow shoe program is growing. We have some new evening programs.
And this new website is an exciting way to keep us all informed
and connected. As always, we are looking forward to our next
week together.
